Beginning of finals week

March 28, 2007

I’m somewhat alarmed that, in my blog so far, I haven’t posted much about my day-to-day life — at least not recently. What does that say about me, eh? Anyway, to make up for it, here’s what went on this past week.

Sunday: I slept in (11 AM), and then tried to study as much as I could for my Histology final, which was Monday. I went over respiratory histology. I really don’t give a crap about most of this stuff (will I ever need to know the types of collagen contained in respiratory epithelia?), but I just study it for the test.

My parents came by at dinnertime and brought me food for the week, and some fried rice for dinner, which we ate outside.

Later that night I got a call from B., and we chatted about his job interview and my parents’ visit. I always like talking to him.

Monday: I woke up at 6 and couldn’t go back to sleep, so I decided to get ready for my test and get there early. The first part, the practical, was pretty easy. But the second part, which was the shelf exam (a section from a “retired” USMLE Step 1) was ridiculous. I don’t think there were more than a handful of questions where I had some certainty about my answer. And I started to get really drowsy. So I finished as quickly as I could and went to the student lounge to take a nap.

The test officially ended at 12, and I was out at 11:20 (although I wasn’t the first to finish). Then at 12:15 I had a meeting for a student group I was a part of. And then I went home.

I feel like I gained a lot of weight last week, even though I just started working out more frequently. I blame it on the cortisol. Even my mom commented that she could tell I had gained weight (adding that I looked better — both my parents see my weight gain as a good thing). Ugh. So I went to the gym again that afternoon and ran for a bit (I can’t do more than 15 minutes) and did one of those bench press machines.

At 6:00 there was a review session for our Thursday exam (Physiology). It covered mostly things I knew, and there were only 4 students there, including me (probably because they aren’t very helpful). There was also food left over from some event with the M.D./Ph.D.’s. I was naughty and had the meatballs and kebabs, and two platefuls of the pastries.

Will things look up tomorrow?
