Blogging styles

April 30, 2007

We all know blogs vary in content and style. A blog could be a collections of links, or an opinion column, or a personal newsletter, or a confessional booth.

I started this one trying to aim for a sort of general-appeal genre, with accounts of my personal life, but no more than I would tell anyone I met in person that day. However, it’s really becoming more like my old blog, where I aired out all of my feelings and frustrations on everything in my life.

And I don’t know if I like that.

No day but today

April 28, 2007

There is no future
There is no past
I live this moment as my last

There’s only us, there’s only this
Forget regret, or life is yours to miss
No other road, no other way
No day but today.

I saw Rent on Wednesday at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, and you know how I love sappy musicals. It made me think about life a lot, and love and relationships.

Life is about taking risks for the people you love. That’s the message for me today.

Fuck politics

April 26, 2007

Once again, the internal politics of the administration is driving out two of our really good faculty. This sucks ass because I’ve really gotten to know these faculty well and I think they are really great people.

And for one of them to be terminated on suspicious grounds is just shitty. I can totally believe it, though, because there has been enough indication in the past of conflict with certain administrators. And I don’t know what I can do about it.

All I know is this is all I can think about right now, when there are a lot of other pressing things to be devoting my attention to.

Who is this “Cutie Honey,” and why was I not informed of this?

This has been a really cool weekend. Yesterday I went out in the afternoon to the Celebrate UCI / Wayzgoose / Earth Day festival out in Aldrich Park on campus. I was there to man a table for a student group I’m in, but I also had a chance to walk around and soak in the festive atmosphere. Wow. Classic cars being shown, booths with funnel cake and ice cream and soda, pony rides and moon bounces (for the kids — lots of community members and alumni there), and medieval swordplay (apparently this is also a medieval festival??). Over where the student groups were set up, there were two stages, one for musical performances, and the other for dance and martial arts performances.

And of course, our very own campus celebrity made an appearance: Read the rest of this entry »

Inconvenience

April 20, 2007

UCI’s public transportation system

When will UCI *finally* get a decent shuttle system?! There’s only one route that goes to most of campus, and it’s one-way, so if I wanted to ride to a direction just counter-clockwise of me, I would have to ride all the way around the circle before I could get off. And it’s not like it’s all that convenient, because there aren’t ANY stops near my apartment complex.

So today, I was in a big hurry to get home after my classes ended, because I needed to make my counseling appointment. Well, it was raining (no complaints about that, Lord knows we need it) so I couldn’t ride my bike back. I was thinking of taking the shuttle, but knowing that it takes such a long time to get anywhere, I opted to walk. Took me thirty freakin minutes in the rain — had to skip lunch and go straight to my appointment. But it’s not like it would have been any faster on the shuttle.

At least they are converting to biodiesel fuel.

Snacks = bad

April 19, 2007

I can never control my snacking. It’s pretty much all-or-nothing for me when it comes to food, so if I have a big bag of Tostitos and a jar of salsa, or a carton of ice cream, I can and will go overboard. Like last night. And again tonight. Also my initial bout of studiousness from last week has pretty much disappeared. Was that really me?

Anyway, I’m currently looking for a lab to work in. A few professors’ work seem interesting, although I’ll have to do more training for some than for others. Is it worth it to train in something I haven’t tried before? What if I find I don’t like it?

Speaking of labs, here is an interesting case study written up by some of our neuroscience faculty.

Two years later, and again without forewarning, we asked AJ to write down the dates for Easter and notations of personal events. Again in less than ten minutes, she produced another table, this time with every Easter date correct and with similar notations about personal events. After she had completed the second table, she was shown the one she had done two years before. She immediately pointed out the one incorrect date from two years before (April 17, 1987 should be April 19, 1987). We reviewed the notations to compare and there was perfect reliability.

About the shootings at Virginia Tech

April 17, 2007

Everyone is talking about the shootings at Virginia Tech. We feel so safe in college, and yet there really is little protection from something like this. What can you do? Install metal detectors outside lecture halls and dormitories?

It’s especially scary considering how often during my undergrad days when people would prop open doors to dorms, or let in any college-age person if they knock on the door. That atmosphere of trust was such a strong part of college life — the feeling of safety and shared experiences with your fellow students. And yet it made us so vulnerable to something like this happening.

I can’t begin to fathom how much this will affect the campus and the students there. PTSD, heightened security, effects on admission for next year, effects on interstudent relationships, effects on race relations on campus (especially since the shooter was Asian), etc.

Crazy covers

April 14, 2007
crazyinlove magicnumbers

How many people have covered “Crazy in Love” (originally by Beyoncé)? At Starbucks yesterday I heard a very pretty cover with acoustic guitar and a man and woman singing. So on to the Internet I go, and apparently Snow Patrol AND Switchfoot have covered this song. Neither was the version I heard at the coffee shop (which turned out to be by The Magic Numbers), and in my opinion, neither is as good.

And how did this happen? I would think that Beyoncé or someone associated with her still owns the copyright to the song, so did they all of a sudden send it to a number of artists and say, “Do something with this”?

By the way, there was a recent Dinosaur Comics on this precise topic! Wow, it’s like I do nothing but go on the internet all day!

Categorizing posts, finally

April 12, 2007

I’ve finally started categorizing my posts. Apparently this makes them appear on certain public pages — and I’m already getting some fans > :)

I will treasure that comment forever.
