Colbert’s portrait up at Smithsonian, inspires young people to visit
January 18, 2008Stephen Colbert’s portrait is on display at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington. Granted, it’s temporary, and on display between the two bathrooms. But it’s near the America’s President’s exhibit, and it’s the one he has on his show, with the three portraits in one.
I love this quote — it captures so many aspects of my generation:
“It’s kind of sad that this is the first time we’ve been here,” Canales said Wednesday as a steady stream of young admirers took their pictures with Colbert’s portrait.
“We might look at the rest of the museum, but we really came for Colbert,” Bexley said. “I needed a new Facebook picture, so it might as well be with Stephen Colbert.”

Yeah, I admit it is kind of shallow. But I also mean it in a loving way: this is sort of a portrait of today’s young American — technophiles, watch Colbert more than the news, a bit of self-deprecating humor, likes being trendy in a counterculture way, great sense of fun. It’s everything a real young person is, that I never find represented accurately in TV or movies.

Hi,
I found your post while doing some monitoring for my client the Smithsonian Channel.
I thought you and your readers might be interested to know that they’ve actually created a reaction video featuring the portrait and uploaded it to YouTube.
You can find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmmebxIVR7M
Hope you enjoy the video!

Glad you liked it
I was really pleased to see that Smithsonian Channel decided to do something with it. Really does capture our generation so well.
